Viking Community Fund Bursary Scheme Success

December 17th 2024

75 young people will benefit from bursaries to help them in their local studies either at UHI Shetland or through an apprenticeship with a local business. The Viking Community Fund bursary scheme, which opened for the first time in October 2024, was launched to support young people who want to remain in Shetland for further education opportunities.

Another support scheme will be launched in January for smaller businesses offering a local apprenticeship opportunity to a young person in Shetland. Up to £15,000 will be available to support with the costs of taking on an apprentice.

Eleanor Gear, SCBF Fund Manager said, “it is exciting to be able to offer the opportunity to enhance the apprenticeship and college experience for young people locally by funding equipment needed to study and tools purchases through the VCF bursary fund. It is hoped that the apprenticeship support fund for small businesses will again, boost the local offering”.

A small training fund is also available for young people under the age of 25 with costs of up to £1,000 in grant funding available. Young people interested in applying should contact SCBF directly.

The bursary fund will open again in 2025 in time for the 2025/26 student intake.
